The botanical colour revival, is a part of the slow textiles movement that is growing as people are becoming more conscious of the waste in the fashion and textile industry. Synthetic dyes were only first used in the latter part of the 19th century and so the history of natural dye is rich and very long! Bela&Boaz silk pillowslips are individually hand dyed by using plant based dyes with alum mordant. Plant extracts, fresh and dried plants are used. I also use Lac extract, a colour derived from the resinous secretion on the lac insect. The botanical dyeing process touches all the senses and Im completely in awe of the many colours found in nature and the surprises of each dyeing session. I choose botanical dyes that are known to have the best wash fastness and light fastness, or at least have high results. Although the beauty of natural colours is that they are not a flat colour. They change and shift and have many shades going on in the one unique piece. Even as it fades over time, the colour is still beautiful. It brings me happiness to know that the dyes are non toxic and to be conscious of being better citizens of this beautiful world. We have power to be part of the change by the choices we make in what we buy or don't buy.
